Text – James 3:1-12

In a report done by some social scientists on gossiping, they stated ” In the vast majority of cases gossip is beneficial. Gossip serves important and psychological functions, it is a unifying force that communicates a groups moral code. It’s the social glue that holds us all together.” (Physiology Today – “The Real Slant on Gossip,” July 1, 1996).

I am afraid this might be the opinion of many born again believers who regularly engage in all forms of destructive gossiping; often doing detrimental and irreversible damage to the body of Christ. Well, if you have even been the victim of gossip, you need no survey to tell you that gossip is no social glue. It damages, deteriorates and disrupts relationships and spoils reputation.

James 3:3-5 – The Tongues has Tremendous Power
James 3:6-8 – The Tongue is a Fire

Can you imagine! Man has dominion over the fish of sea, over the birds of the air, over the cattle, over all the earth and over all that creeps on the earth. (Genesis 1:26) Yet man cannot subdue the tongue.

God hates gossiping as stated in Proverbs 6:16. Therefore, we must strive to get to a mature level in Christ where the Holy Spirit controls our thoughts, so our conversation can be channeled through a clean and wholesome heart. Our speech is a measure of our maturity. “A good man out of good treasure of his heart brings forth evil for out of the abundance of the heart his mouth speaks.” (Luke 6:45).
